Nov. 5th, 2009 01:22 pm New Fanvid-Sink or Swim

Haven't made an XF vid in a while, so I'm excited to get back to it. The song is Sink or Swim by Tyrone Wells which is just an absolutely gorgeous song and screamed MSR. Hope you like it:D

Nov. 5th, 2009 10:09 pm Unpopular Opinions?

I got this idea from an entry in another community, and thought it could be fun doing this here, XF related. Do you have any opinions about the X-Files that are, generally, unpopular? Think you're the only one who loves (or hates) a certain character? Never found anyone who also enjoys watching your favourite episode? Share your unpopular opinions! :)

Nov. 6th, 2009 08:29 am Yuletide Candy Exchange!

I had completely forgotten that I signed up for the candy exchange until I got the email telling me who I will be sending to and one from the person sending to me. It's very exciting. I have to think of what are the best Korean sweets that I've discovered so far so I can share them. The first thing on my list is yakwa, a sort of fried rice dough cookie and my new favourite thing about Korea :P

Nov. 5th, 2009 01:15 pm LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be giving ten random users paid account credits.

Photos of the week

If you haven't visited our new LiveJournal photo community, you're in for an amazing visual trip. LiveJournal users from around the world will take you on a scenic journey to everywhere. Post your own pictures or kick back and enjoy at [info]lj_photophile. You can view some of this week's awesome photos after the jump. Nov. 5th, 2009 09:53 pm Yuletide volume 1

Only two months of teaching and I've already gone crazy...aka: I'm signing up for Yuletide.

I actually feel that this is a big moment for me, fandom wise. Like a right of passage, maybe?
I get a lot of plot bunnies but I rarely get around to finishing them (yes, that does mean there are several unfinished works of fanfic on my hard drive...some even epic), so things with a concrete deadline are usually a good idea for me. On the other hand, I tend to get really panicky when I'm writing for someone and bash out some crap that I'm embarrassed to say I wrote...so who knows how this holiday season will go.
Now, I'm off to pick my requests, and let them know what I can write in...how about a straight jacket?

Oct. 31st, 2009 08:38 am Mulder & Scully Pumpkin

Hey everyone!

Hope you guys are planning something spiffy for Halloween!

I've unfortunately been hit by the flu bug but that didn't stop me from carving a pumpkin! My friend and I do it every year. I asked for some stencils earlier in the week but I just ended up making my own with a program.

Here's the best photo I have so far. I'll be taking more tomorrow night.

There are a lot of different TXF communities and I guess you’re asking: „Why yet another?“ The answer to this question is quite easy: there can be never enough platforms to share a mutual obsession ;o)
This new community is dedicated to the 202 episodes that still entertain us!

Oct. 30th, 2009 05:17 pm Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC

EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

Oct. 30th, 2009 03:55 pm Final offer, X Files stuff for sale

As half of my X files hoard was sold last time, I still have remaining merchandise in which I thought id offer once again. This is the last time ill be posting about this, if nobody wants anything ill give them to charity.

- 2 X Files Special Edition Magazines
- First issue Gold Edition with badge
- Pilot comic
- X-posed magazine/booklet
- Antibodies book (this will be thrown in free)

http://pics.livejournal.com/crimson_rx/pic/00018e9t

I also have (which I haven't featured on the photo) a tape of Gillian Andersons video debut - Extremis by Hal. Its a 4 minute video literally. Virgin released these when it came out. I will throw this in free if anybody wants the rest of my magazines (along with the book).

As postage is high ill only be only adding a little amount on top. It is insane these days so I understand that might be a issue for most of you.

Basing this on last time (as this weighs about the same) postage for UK people will be around 12-15 pounds and USA will be around 25 dollars. So for the lot ill sell it for around 18 for UK and 30 for USA and overseas. If anyone wants only a couple of items ill do this too if no offers for the lot is offered. Be aware if it exceeds my estimate by alot I may ask for a little more to cover it, but it should be enough.

Thanks for your time :)

Oct. 29th, 2009 08:58 pm Never Again

I know this question has been discussed a million times over the last ten years or so, but I talked about it with some friends not too long ago, and we still couldn't agree on it. And since we've had some nice discussion posts in this community recently, I thought I'd ask you all, too.

Never Again. Did Scully sleep with Ed Jerse, what do you think? The whole thing is very ambiguous in the episode (of course it is, it's XF), it's hard to tell what went on that night. On the one hand, Scully's state of mind in the episode, the way she flirts with Jerse, the way she's thinking about her life and contemplating if she's happy with it... all these things could lead you to believe she did sleep with him, let down her guard for once, did something spontaneous.
On the other hand, well, there's the fact that she woke up on the couch, fully dressed. And it's Scully, who hardly ever does anything spontaneous.

Okay, sorry for rambling (XF does that to me), so here's a little poll.

Poll #1478219 Never Again

So do you think they did it?

Oct. 29th, 2009 03:57 pm X-Files Charity Calendar 2010

Two Philes from Germany created a really pretty X-Files calendar from photos they took during a trip to Iceland. The photos were on display as part of the fanart contest at X-Con Berlin 2009. From first hand experience I can say they are quite amazing and obviously I'm not alone with this opinion, since they made first place in the contest.

I'm crossposting information on how to acquire a calendar here, because I figured there might be some interest among LiveJournal users as well. Part of the proceeds will go to Buskaid, one of the charity projects Gillian supports, so it's for a good cause as well.

Oct. 29th, 2009 03:47 pm “The X-Files“ Convention Successful – Fans Collect more than € 500 for the Good Cause

Picture )

Berlin, Germany. The first “X-Files“ Convention on German soil, the X-Con 2009, was a full success. On 17th and 18th October, more than 120 visitors came to the Hotel Mercure Berlin Tempelhof Airport to meet other “Philes" - as fans of the show call themselves - listen to interesting lectures and, of course, to meet guest star Dean Haglund in person. Some visitors came all the way from abroad, amongst others from Finland and South Africa.

Though the Convention also subserved a good cause: At the end, organizer Monika Kirchberger could hand over a cheque of € 585 to Sylvia Krocker of the Regional Group Berlin/Brandenburg of the Federal Association for Neurofibromatosis*. The money goes into a camp for children and teenagers. In that camp, the fallen ill kids - who also suffer from the disease in their daily life, e.g. by being avoided or been looked at in a strange way - have got the possibility along with other affected kids to spend a great time.

But what is the connection between “The X-Files“ and the donation to the Federal Association for Neurofibromatosis?

For more than 15 years, leading actress Gillian Anderson is active in Neurofibromatosis associations in the US and Great Britain. Aged 3, her brother Aaron was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 - a neurologic disease which is - until today - incurable and can deface the appearance by inner and outer tumors.

At the moment, talks are undergoing to set up another convention of this kind in 2010.
